Product Overview

Introduced in 1930 by R.E.L.Maunsell for the Southern Railway, the V or Schools Class were probably the most successful 4-4-0 tender engines built in Britain. Carrying a shortened King Arthur boiler and boasting three cylinders these powerful locos were built for use on the restricted Hastings line with its narrow tunnels (hence the inward leaning cab design). Named after British public schools the locos spent their careers on the eastern and central sections working expresses. They carried olive green and malachite liveries in SR days and BR black and brunswick green after the nationalisation. The class survived until 1963 and three have been preserved.
